About W.A. Johnson School
W.A. Johnson School serves approximately 675 students in Grades K-5 who live north of Irving Park Road or south of Irving Park Road and west of Church Road.
Building Overview
W.A. Johnson School originally opened in 1958 following a post-World War II building boom.
However, it re-opened as an an expanded and completely rennoveated school in August 2013, and merged its population with that of nearby Mohawk School, an undersized, deteriorating school originally built on the northside of the District in 1955. (The Mohawk site is now a neighborhood built and maintained by the District.)
This was part of a $48 million facility renewal effort that brought 21st century learning environments to all BSD2 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.
W.A. Johnson School was built with student collaboration and technology as the centerpiece of design, and includes the following design, technology, and safty features.
Design and Technology Highlights
Design
- Design elements that provide flexibility, adaptability, and variety.
- Provides opportunities for 21st century learning through team teaching, peer tutoring, cooperative learning, and project-based learning with flex spaces for each classroom and for each group of five or six classrooms.
- Appropriate aspects of a high-efficiency building design such as daylight harvesting controls – dimming lights when sun is bright, occupancy sensors that turn lights off when room is vacant, and state-of-the-art heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
- Adequate natural light in all classrooms and learning areas.
- Design allows for community access to gym, cafeteria, and learning centers after the school day.
Technology
- High-speed internet and wireless system that will allow for multiple mobile users capable of streaming video throughout the buildings.
- New phone system with phones and voicemail for every classroom.
- New projectors with Apple TV, which allows easy broadcasting and student collaboration from iPads.
Safety
- New entries allow staff to view visitors before being buzzed inside.
- All classroom windows have specialized one-way blinds that allow for staff and students to see the outside but anyone on the outside cannot see in. These shades will be drawn in any emergency.

There is no school or place like W.A. Johnson!
I am excited to begin the 2024-2025 year at Johnson, and look forward to working with our students, staff, parents, and community members. I decided to become an educator because I love helping students learn and making a difference. I have 10 years of classroom experience where I taught many different grade levels in elementary, middle, and high school before becoming a school administrator.
As an administrator, I was drawn to Bensenville because of the rich culture, diversity, and commitment to excellence. Serving as the principal at W.A. Johnson is a great honor, as it is a responsibility. I believe that our commitment to work together is key to fulfilling our mission of children achieving their highest potential. I am honored to serve this community, and will work hard to gain your trust and respect as W.A. Johnson’s principal. I look forward to working with everyone in our school. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Bensenville is a wonderful place to serve the community and improve professionally because of the District's commitment to "Learning and Growing Together." I am honored to have the opportunity to help lead a school with such persevering students, an extremely dedicated staff, and a supportive school community. I am excited to unite my experience, my openness to learn, and my child-centered approach to support our students. I look forward to working with everyone in our school. On January 10, we informed the BSD2 community that District 2 was one of many school districts across the country impacted by a December 28, 2024, data breach of the PowerSchool Student Information System. Here is the most current information provided by PowerSchool and resources you can contact for more information.
Classes will begin on Wednesday, August 20, and the last day of school will be Tuesday, June 2, unless emergency days are needed. Other key dates are as follows ...
Please make certain the school has your correct phone numbers and email addresses on file. Also, please revisit who you have listed as emergency contacts.
The Illinois Department of Public Health offers recommendations for avoiding respiratory viruses as seasonal illnesses increase.
The program will ultimately provide the District’s elementary students the opportunity to leave BSD2 schools in eighth grade ready for advanced Spanish classes and the potential to obtain the Biliteracy Seal in high school.

BSD2 eFlyers
BSD2 eFlyers
District 2 has gone "green" in its approach to distributing community flyers.
Rather than sending flyers home with each student via backpack mail, District and community flyers are posted on the BSD2 E-Flyers page for parents to view or print 24/7.
It is estimated that this saves our schools hundreds of hours per year spent sorting and handling the materials, not to mention the number of trees and other resources saved in producing them.
